Automobile design is mostly a specialized field that incorporates several types of safety, business acumen, and creative talents. The automobile industry is not limited to automobiles alone but also includes many other forms of wheeled transportation. Automobile design involves teamwork in which each member contributes from their specialized knowledge base. The field is ever-changing, offering the designer a high-powered and progressive work environment.

Automobile designers frame the appearance, components, and also ergonomics of automobiles and some other road vehicles, which also include vans, trucks, motorcycles, and buses. The main functional development of a vehicle includes the mechanical, electrical, software, electronic, and safety aspects, which is usually done by a team of automobile engineers, and on the other side, the aesthetics and appearance of the vehicle are almost left in the talented and artistic hands of an automobile designer. Mostly, automobile designers are industrial designers with an art background and creative sensibility.

The design processing will more often begin with a consultation between managers, supervisors, and clients who altogether do the identification of various requirements of a design. Meetings are mostly followed by a great deal of researchers regarding costs, production, vehicle use, the time frame for completion, etc., of the proposed design. Once everything is sorted out, sketches are drawn, typically using CAD software, and final designs are also presented. Some of the famous automobile designers are Chris Bangle, Ian Callum, Harley Earl, Battista Farina, and Henrik Fisker. Top automobile designing companies are Tata Motors, Bajaj auto limited, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota motor corporation, etc.

The duties of an automobile designer are framing layouts of automobile components, including fenders, the hood, the lamps, console, doors, mirrors, the assemblies, and systems using prototypes, models, and dozens of sketches. Most of the design process includes combining with automobile engineers to ensure all calculations and mathematical formulas whether they are correct and that the final design is not only creative but meets the requirements of the consumer and reflects the image of the company.

A little bit of creative skill and artistic ability is what you want to become an automobile designer, there are also other skills that are equally very important. For example, they must be effective communicators, as well as have sound listening skills. They must be able to cope and work with others, and take criticism easily. They must handle deadlines, find innovative solutions to complex issues, and make efforts to move up with the changing auto industry, as well as any software and technology used in designing. Good writing skills and drawing skills are also essential, and a foreign language can also add a big asset in the field of international automobile design.

In addition, an automobile designer will work with a group of styling team during the design process for each model. The crew all along with consists of a chief designer, exterior designers, and interior designers. A designer’s work atmosphere consists of an office or studio. Workspaces mostly include work tables for sketching, meeting rooms with whiteboards for brainstorming, and computer tables for preparing designs. At times, designers seem to travel to design centers, testing facilities, client’s workplaces, and manufacturing plants. In addition, since many automobile factories and manufacturing plants are overseas, designers may often travel abroad to meet with factory personnel during the design process.

Automobile designers take their role in every aspect of a vehicle’s design, from the initial to final appearance to overall functionality. They choose how a car is shaped, along with what color it has to be as attractive as possible and to attract sales. However, they are also responsible for functionality which includes making sure of the vehicle functioning as well as its looks.
