Photography has developed as a profitable and interesting career option for young people in India as the advertising and media industries have grown. Photography has evolved dramatically since it was considered merely a hobby only a few years ago. It has grown in popularity as a vocation among people of all ages, not just the young. A career in photography has a diverse and ever-changing scope.

Photography is quickly becoming a popular career option for people of all ages these days. Photography is both a science and an art form. It is a creative medium in which the camera replaces the pen or paintbrush.

A photographer must be able to compose a good shot of any subject, whether it be a piece of technology, the beauty of a human body, scenery, or a child’s grin.It is true that a single image can sometimes be far more expressive than a thousand words. Few professions have as many opportunities as photography. Photography is separated into various streams, each of which generates countless work prospects.

Photography: Eligibility Criteria

Nowadays, a number of schools offer photography as a vocational subject at the 10+2 level. There are no strict academic criteria for full-time photography courses; however, individuals who have passed the 10+2 exam are eligible for photography diploma/certificate courses.

Photography is also available as an elective course for a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.

Photography – Career Opportunities

A modern-day photographer can work in a variety of avatars, the most noteworthy of which are:

Photojournalists/press photographers: Photojournalists provide images to the national and international press. This job requires the ability to shoot newsworthy people, places, sports, political events, and community events for newspapers, journals, magazines, or television. To shoot a good news photograph, a photographer must have a journalistic sense.

Feature Photographers: Feature photography entails essentially describing a story via photos and hence necessitates extensive understanding of the subject. Many photographers specialize in wildlife, sports, travel, and environmental photography, among other things.

Commercial (industrial) Photographers: These photographers photograph merchandise, factory exteriors and interiors, and machinery both inside and outdoors for use in company brochures, annual reports, advertising, and selling.
Portrait and wedding photographers: Photograph people or small groups and work with subjects such as pets, children, families, weddings, celebrations, and sports and social club activities.
Advertising Photographers: Work in photographic sections of advertising companies and photographic studios. A significant number of them are freelancers. Advertising photography is possibly the highest-paid and most competitive field of all; success in this field is entirely dependent on talent, efficiency, and the proper personality.
Fashion Photographers: This field has only lately emerged in India. The majority of fashion photography is done in either Mumbai or Delhi in very sophisticated and well-equipped studios by freelancers commissioned by fashion houses or advertising agencies.

Scientific photographers: Often have additional understanding in areas such as engineering, medicine, biology, or chemistry that helps them picture a variety of subject-related items or scientific phenomena. In terms of assignments, this job role provides a wide range of tasks. Work alongside news reporters or as a freelancer on independent tasks in the environment, wildlife, and other related topics.
Freelance Photographer: The most prevalent job path for photographers is freelancing. Photographers who want to work for themselves must be able to manage their own businesses. They can work as freelancers in any of the fields listed above.
Self employed photographers or freelancers may license the use of their images through stock photo companies or contract with clients or agencies to deliver photographs as needed. They should also establish their own photographic style in order to distinguish themselves from the competitors.

Personal skills:
Apart from a clever, interested, and attentive mind, the subject necessitates a natural instinct, observation power, instruction, a high level of discipline, practice, and an eye for detail. A photographer must be able to blend details with creativity in order to capture a good image in his camera.
