Unbound Artforms

In a world dominated by white cube galleries, it is of quintessential importance to offer fluidity for the proliferation of art and art forms. With this ideology, DOT Art Gallery, an initiative by DOT School of Design, aims to provide a space and time for artists across multiple mediums.  DOT Art Gallery is the answer to the city’s rising demand for fluid spaces with a certain sensibility to expedite the progress of traditional and contemporary art forms.

The inaugural event of the Gallery features, ‘Irai Ivar Idam’, showcasing the exquisite works of the octogenarian legend, Mr. Manivelu. Irai Ivar Idam is the juxtaposition of spiritual transcendence and artistic vigour. With every embellishment and minute detail of the gods & goddesses impeccably captured in the paintings, they offered the spectators the experience of visiting each of these holy places in person. The magnificence of the four-decade-old temple paintings kept the observers revisiting the exhibit and earnestly suggesting the prolongation of the art show at Orikkai. Following which, the show which was initially planned for just three days at DOT has now been extended to a period of one month.

The opening which took place on the 17th of November was headed by Guest of Honour, Mr. M. Sovan Kumar who presides as the Regional Secretary of Lalit Kala Akademi, Chennai. Along with him, the Chief Guest, veteran spokesperson, Prof. Dr. Sudha Seshayyan, M.S., who is the Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University, co-paneled the interaction with the students on this occasion. The event started at around 2.00 p.m with the ribbon-cutting ceremony commemorating the opening of the exhibit to the general public.

Both Mr. M.Sovan Kumar and Dr. Sudha Seshayyan were transfixed on the divine paintings of Mr. Manivelu. The guests mentioned in their speeches that the minuscule details and the artist’s craftsmanship allowed them to behold the splendor of all these deities and receive their blessings all in one place within a span of one hour. Quoting Dr. Sudha Seshayyan, “It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to witness such grandeur, piousness and exquisite work of art in one space”.

The inaugural ceremony started with DOT’s second-year B.Des student, Arihant, presenting the welcome note. The guests addressed the students and the faculty of DOT School of Design mentioning how Mr.Manivelu’s art moved them as individuals, shared insights about their art philosophy and wished them all a great future. Mr. Sovan Kumar said,  “It was truly wonderful to share this experience with the young minds at DOT. It is such a privilege for you all to be able to study in such a space that offers you the freedom to explore and come up with innovative ideas. All the best and looking forward to more interactive sessions with each of you here.” The panelist invited the students to visit Lalit Kala Akademi and his studio for an insight into his artistic expressions in hopes of expanding the student’s knowledge of art and philosophy.
