INTERIOR DESIGN

INTRODUCTION

Interior Design focuses on the relationship between architecture, design, and man with the interior as a point of departure.

An architect or a designer from the Interior Design works with spatial organization and all its human implications. The more rapidly organizations, patterns of living and local traditions are disrupted, the more awareness is needed.

WHAT IS INTERIOR DESIGN?

Interior design is the planning and designing of space within an enclosure, to make it more functional, aesthetically pleasing and healthy.

It focuses upon the flow of people between multiple areas of interior environments and delivers value and understanding in spaces across both the private and public realm. The emphasis of the discipline is upon working with people and space, particularly looking at the notion of place, also place identity and genius loci.

As a discipline, it uses the language of architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture to communicate design intentions.

Interior Design

WHAT DOES AN INTERIOR DESIGNER DO?

  • Develop initial ideas and acquire key information about potential projects, discuss requirements in detail with clients (the brief) and set project schedules
  • Understand clients’ needs and the needs of the people using the building to develop design concepts and establish final briefs
  • Consider materials and costs according to budgets and negotiate project fees
  • Conduct feasibility studies for projects
  • Research and gather information and photographs relating to the project
  • Produce ‘sample’ or ‘mood’ boards to present to clients
  • Source products, e.g. Fittings, furniture, lighting, finishes, decoration and dressing, and provide samples for clients
  • Prepare detailed working drawings, designs, plans, models and schemes, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software
  • Survey buildings
  • Work in a team with other designers
  • Supervise work at the design stage and on-site
  • Work closely with quantity surveyors to establish costs and work schedules on larger projects, with architects and other design professionals to determine the best use of space, and with manufacturers and contractors
  • Identify new business and sell services to potential clients
  • Keep up to date with new developments in the design industry

EDUCATION

The Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design is 4 Years and it is a professional degree. During the course the students get to learn the Elements & Principles of Interior Design and its history. They get the knowledge about the interior services like water supply, drainage, electrical, HVAC, Fire safety, Lifts etc. They also learn about the materials and construction methods, and the ways to deliver their ideas into sketches, models, working drawings. Site visits, Professional internships for the current industry experience is given. They get to work on mock up projects which will be reviewed by the real time architects and designers.
