This one-year PG diploma course teaches costume design, period costume construction and practical wardrobe supervision and management. The course will focus on practical, creative and theoretical skills in an interdisciplinary process engaging experts from Fashion and Film. Gain core skills such as fashion drawing, pattern cutting, costume construction and fitting techniques, observation, analysis and expansive research practices. Explore anthropological, socio-political, psychological, environmental and historical/cultural concepts when considering the analysis of character and script. The course trains you to develop enhanced design profile through an exploration of industry applications such as music promos, commercials, costume breakdown and innovative challenge-based projects.

Skills Required For Fashion Design

DOT provides ample opportunities for creative minds that have an affinity for fashion. We offer B.Des in Fashion Design, a four-year undergraduate course that deals with the basics of fashion, colour, design, sketching, material procession, and so much more.

A student with a PG diploma in Costume Design from DOT is well equipped to practice as a professional costume designer to independently establish themselves as an entrepreneur or to be placed as an intern under a firm that specializes in costume design. The students are encouraged with a democratic focus on any area of costume design such as Fashion Coordinator, Costume Designer for Films, music videos, plays and events, Fabric Buyer, Fashion Consultant and many more. Through this one-year program students will also gain an increased awareness of freelance practice and self-management techniques

What are the Selection Criteria to Join PG Diploma in Costume Design at DOT School of Design?

DOT School of Design conducts DOT-DAT (Design Aptitude Test) applicable for students interested to start their Design education at DOT. DOT-DAT comprises two levels –

  • Written Examination :
    Round 1 - Technical Test
    Round 2 - On Table Test
  • Personal Interview & Portfolio Submission

Who are all suitable for a PG Diploma in Costume Design?

Any candidate with a keen interest in developing his/her/their skills in costume design are suitable for the program. Through the Diploma program, students gain the skills and the industry connections required to kickstart a lucrative career as a costume designer. Students who want to get more training in costume designing as a hobby are also eligible for this course.

What is the eligibility for joining a one-year Diploma Program in Costume Design?

The students are required to possess the following minimum qualification to be able to pursue a PG Diploma in Costume Design. In addition, one needs to pass the DOT-DAT (Design Aptitude Test) to qualify. Know more details at https://www.dotsod.in/admissions/.

  • MODE OF SELECTION - DOT-DAT(Design Aptitude Test) Personal Interview & Portfolio Submission
    • Successful completion of Undergraduate program of minimum 3-year duration in any specialization (or) Successful completion of Full-time Diploma of minimum 4-year duration in Design after 10+2 system from any university or institute recognized by the government of India.
    • A strong portfolio in the specific field of application is mandatory.
Will the language of instruction include Tamil?
Due to personalized teaching methodologies, the language barrier will be broken due to the use of regional & common languages such as Tamil, English, etc. Students are encouraged to improve their flair for the English language before the completion of the course to present their illustrations to an international audience, but it is not mandatory.
What is the fee and are there any financial assistance programs for the students?

The fee prescribed for this course is Rs.90,000/- which is inclusive of the entire course of study. Deserving candidates from underprivileged backgrounds are eligible for Scholarships through our outreach program, the CLAP initiative. Click here for more details.

Will we have any expert training sessions, workshops and internships?

As DOT believes in imparting hands-on knowledge to the students, the curriculum includes frequent expert training sessions, practical sessions, guest lectures from industry experts, workshops & internship opportunities. DOT also offers assistance programs to the students such as,

INCO - Industry Connect, which facilitates the students to directly interact & work with the industry professionals.
IRC - Incubation Research Centre, where the students are given 360° guidance to start up their own practice and to be entrepreneurs in this effervescent field.
Fablab - A fully equipped high-tech workspace that is accessible to the students as well as to any designer from the industry. The designers can also enlist the students as interns for their projects.
