Communication Design: What Exactly Is It?

Communication Design is an indispensable version of art enabled largely by explosive technological growth in this digital world. In simple terms, Communication Design can be defined as a process through which designs are created and utilised to convey a message in an impactful manner. This art discipline harnesses the various visual communication elements and graphic design to create compelling messages that impress the viewer.

A Visual Communication course teaches students to utilise graphics, illustrations, photography, and animation to deliver a message. The Graphic Designer course imparts knowledge on how to use visual elements and textual content to accentuate a message.

Communication Design extends beyond all the realms mentioned above. It not only impacts message delivery but also creates channels to get the message across to the viewer. It stimulates the thought process because it is not limited to conveying messages but also designs channels to communicate emotions, information, data, information, and knowledge.

There are many different types of Communication Design, the most important of which are discussed briefly in this article.

THE IMPORTANT TYPES OF COMMUNICATION DESIGN

Graphic Design

Graphic Design is another popular version of art. But not many of us know that it stems from Communication Design. It is often a part of an entire creation that involves graphics for marketing materials, advertising campaigns, and websites. Graphic Design comprises designing a layout and choosing the right symbols, images, and words to deliver the message.

Advertising

From simple print-out advertisements to expensive videos, advertisements have long been a channel of communication to entice consumers by promoting products or spreading social messages. This multi-crore business has immense scope for communication designers. Advertising is also an easy way to communicate effectively with the target audience. A good advertisement can boost sales and can potentially stay in people’s minds for many years.

Visual Identity

Visual identity is a type of art form that often refers to fine arts and applied arts. It pertains to symbols, logos, shapes, and other visual elements to make it easy to recognise the image. The best examples of visual identity are logos of brands. One can easily remember the name of the brands only by seeing the logos. That is how impactful visual identity can be.

Data Visualization

It is a form of communication, and data are not written in words but represented in a graphical format. The key elements for data visualisation, such as charts, graphs, maps, and pie diagrams, make it easy to understand information concerning patterns, trends, and outliers. Data visualisation helps to analyse important information collected from various sources and helps to arrive at better decisions.

Writing and Editing

Ever since words have been in existence, they have been used as a great channel of communication. Writing is an art, and editing is another form of art that refines the written content. All novels, books, journals, literature work, informational documents, blogs, etc., need edits to make it more interesting for the reader.

Interaction Design

Today, there is an app for almost everything. These digital products are immensely popular not only as a means of simplifying life but also as effective communication tools. Apps created to enhance communication come with user-friendly advancements such as voice messaging, video calling, conference calls, etc. Apps are perfect examples of Interaction Design, whereby the design focuses entirely on how the app will make interaction possible amongst its users.

Art and Illustrations

Art is the most primitive form of communication and dates back to millions of years when the early men drew pictures in caves. Today, art is a vast realm that fascinates people all over the world. With art, there is no need for oral communication. Messages can be conveyed through photographs, illustrations, graphics, pictograms, animation, and films.

Marketing communication

Graphic Design is another popular version of art. But not many of us know that it stems from Communication Design.
